Down Syndrome Achievement Fund The Down Syndrome Achievement Fund was established in 2003 as an endowment fund at the Grand Rapids Community Foundation to provide permanent funding for educational and therapeutic programs to support the needs of individuals with Down syndrome. The long-term goal of the fund is to establish a Resource Center where individuals with Down syndrome and their families can come for support, therapeutic and educational services, recreation, and social opportunities. The 2008 benefit was held at Kent Country Club on Saturday, May 3, 2008. This year we were honored to have Cheryl and Dan Scheuerman as guest speakers. Their first 2 children were born with Down syndrome, then they endured the loss of two babies and a miscarriage. Healing occurred after the adoption of two daughters, followed again by grief after another pregnancy loss. Their story is about faith, love and acceptance of a family they, well, didn’t quite plan.
